Birding in Kushiro and Nemuro (February 3-4, 2026)

Although it was bitterly cold, there was no wind and it was a calm, pleasant day. At Kirittappu, I had the unexpected pleasure of spotting a Ring-necked Duck, and at Cape Nosappu, I was able to observe an Asian Rosyfinch.

Birding in Fukuoka, Kagoshima and Miyazaki (January 29 - February 2, 2026 )

During our tour of Kyushu, we were able to spot the Copper Pheasant in Fukuoka Prefecture, and the Siberian Crane, White-naped Crane, Hooded Crane, Sandhill Crane and Demoiselle Crane in Izumi. We also observed an unexpected flock of Red-billed Starlings on reclaimed land, and were able to see a Chinese Penduline Tit at close quarters. In Miyazaki, I spotted a rare Greylag Goose and was also able to charter a boat to observe the Japanese Murrelet.

Birdwatching in Fukuoka and Saga (January 28, 2026)

In Fukuoka, we were able to spot a male Copper Pheasant, which was undoubtedly the highlight of the tour. Although the mountain is at a low altitude, the climb was steep, so we ascended slowly, allowing the participants to take occasional breaks, and after about an hour, we spotted the male emerging from the side of the trail. In Saga, we were able to observe waterbirds, including the endangered Saunder’s Gull.
